Your pets are family too, so why not let them shine in your portraits? As an Alabama family photographer (and a proud dog mom myself), I’ve learned that including pets – especially dogs – in your photos can make the session even more meaningful. Whether you’re planning outdoor fall portraits or a cozy in-home session, here are my top tips for making it stress-free.
1. Prep Your Pup Ahead of Time
Dogs get just as nervous (and excited!) as kids do. Before your session, make sure your pup has had a walk or some playtime so they’re not bursting with energy. Bring along a favorite toy or ball to grab their attention, and don’t forget the treats. A few small rewards can go a long way in helping them focus and enjoy the session.

2. Choose the Right Location
When planning your family photoshoot in Birmingham or Mobile, think about your dog’s personality. High-energy pups may do best outdoors where there’s space to run, while a calm pup might be happiest curled up on the couch during an in-home session. I always recommend a pet-friendly location where your dog feels comfortable and safe.
*Don’t worry, I have a list of my go-to spots when it comes to pups in the city.

3. Embrace the Candid Moments
The truth is, dogs rarely “pose” and that’s part of the fun. Some of the best photos come from the in-between moments, like your pup running into the frame, licking your child’s face, or snuggling up at your feet. These candid shots often end up being the favorites because they capture your family’s story.

4. Plan for a Little Extra Time
Including pets means we might need a few breaks, and that’s perfectly normal. Giving your dog a moment to sniff around or relax makes the session smoother for everyone. When you build in that flexibility, you’ll get happier kids, a calmer pup, and photos that feel natural.

What About Cats?
While dogs are usually up for adventures, cats tend to be most comfortable at home. In-home family sessions are the perfect way to include your feline friends. Whether they decide to perch on a windowsill or curl up in your lap, they add personality and authenticity to your photos.
