Fall is one of the most popular times for family portraits in Alabama, and for good reason. The golden light, crisp air, and colorful leaves make the perfect backdrop for your photos. But the question I get asked most often is, “What should we wear?”
As a Birmingham family photographer, I’ve guided families through this season for years, and I know that outfits can make a big difference in how your photos feel. Here are three of my go-to tips for planning what to wear for your fall family photoshoot.

1. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing jeans and a white shirt. Instead, think in terms of color palettes. Choose 2–3 colors that complement each other and build outfits around those shades. For example, if mom wears a patterned dress, dad and the kids can pull colors from that pattern for a cohesive look without being too “matchy.”

2. Think Seasonally
Fall is the perfect time for earthy tones and rich colors. Warm neutrals, soft pastels, or even deep jewel tones look beautiful against Alabama’s autumn scenery. Consider the setting of your photoshoot too — a Christmas Tree Farm calls for a different vibe than downtown Birmingham photography.

3. Choose Comfort and Confidence
The best outfits are the ones that let you relax and enjoy your family. Avoid large logos or overly busy patterns that distract from your faces. Instead, choose pieces that you feel good in. If your kids (or partner!) are comfortable, the smiles will come naturally.
