Welcoming a new baby is tender, emotional, and honestly…a little chaotic. Those early days at home are full of feeding schedules, tiny noises, and figuring things out one moment at a time. That’s exactly why in-home newborn sessions are such a favorite for Birmingham families.
As a Birmingham newborn photographer, my goal is to create a calm, cozy experience that feels natural and unforced. One that documents this season just as it is, in the place where your family is settling into life together.
Below are my best tips to help you feel prepared, relaxed, and confident heading into your in-home newborn session.

When should we schedule our newborn session?
I recommend scheduling your newborn session within the first two weeks after delivery. During this window, babies tend to sleep more, stay extra cuddly, and curl up naturally which is perfect for those soft, cozy newborn images.
That said, every baby is different, and your session will always be guided by your baby’s needs. There’s flexibility built into the process.
How should we plan around feedings?
If possible, plan the session around a feeding so baby starts off full and content. But please don’t stress – feeding breaks, diaper changes, and snuggle pauses are always expected and welcomed.
In-home newborn photography for Birmingham moms is designed to be slow and supportive. There is no rush, ever.

My house is a mess… is that a problem?
Short answer? No.
Long answer? Absolutely not.
I typically photograph in areas like the nursery, living room, or primary bedroom, but what really matters is the light. I’ve photographed sessions in dining rooms simply because the window light was beautiful and you’d never know from the final images.
You don’t need a spotless home. A quick tidy near windows is more than enough. Your home is meant to look lived in, especially right now.
What if my baby is fussy?
Totally normal, and very common.
One helpful tip is to turn the heat up a bit. Babies love warmth, even if it makes us sweat a little. Fans can sometimes make them chilly, so we may turn those off temporarily. Having a sound machine nearby can also be incredibly soothing.
If baby needs extra comfort or time? We pause. Always.

How do you handle older siblings during newborn photos?
We go at their speed.
I never force siblings to hold the baby or participate before they’re ready. We let them warm up naturally, keep things relaxed, and follow their lead.
Pro tip from many Birmingham family sessions: Cheerios. Trust me.
Can our dog be part of the session?
Absolutely. They were your first baby, after all.
Furry family members are always welcome during in-home newborn sessions. The same goes for toddlers. I give everyone time to get comfortable with me and my camera, and once they do, the sweetest moments tend to unfold naturally.

How much time should we plan for?
I recommend blocking off an hour to an hour and a half for your session. This allows plenty of time for outfit changes, feedings, diaper changes, and those in-between moments that make your newborn photos feel calm and unhurried.
