It’s always a little intimidating to step in front of a camera – especially when you’re wrangling little ones, coordinating outfits, and trying to remember whether you brushed your own hair. Trust me, I’ve been there. But as your photographer (and professional calm-in-the-chaos finder), I promise family photos don’t have to be stressful.
After photographing dozens of families over the years, I’ve learned what makes sessions smooth, fun, and full of real connection. Here are three of my favorite tips to help you feel calm, confident, and ready to fall in love with the moments that tell your family’s story.

1. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same white shirt and jeans! Instead, think about choosing a color palette – soft neutrals, earth tones, or pastels – and letting everyone express their style within it. Maybe your daughter wears a patterned dress, and your partner pulls a solid color from that pattern for their shirt. It looks cohesive without feeling cookie-cutter.

2. Plan Around Your Family’s Rhythm
Want happy kids in your photos? Avoid booking your session during nap time or when everyone’s getting a little hangry. Aim for a time of day when your crew is usually well-rested and fed. And plan to arrive a little early – that way everyone has time to settle in, stretch their legs, and explore a bit before the camera comes out.

3. Make It an Adventure
This isn’t just a photo session – it’s a moment in your family’s story. Talk it up ahead of time with your kiddos, plan a fun treat afterward (ice cream, anyone?), and let yourself relax into the experience. I’ll guide you the whole way through and help you focus on what matters most: the love, the laughter, and the sweet in-between moments you’ll want to remember forever.
